The government agency ACODECO (Consumer Protection) enforces compliance, and you can file a complaint if any business refuses. One-Time Household Goods Import Exemption

Available once upon establishing residency

Pensionado visa holders are entitled to a one-time exemption of up to $10,000 on the importation of household goods and personal belongings when relocating to Panama. This covers furniture, appliances, electronics, and personal effects. This exemption is used at the time you establish your residency and ship your belongings — it can only be claimed once. Work with your shipping company and immigration lawyer to ensure proper documentation for customs.

Always Carry Your Pensionado Carné

To access any of these discounts, you must present your official Panama Pensionado carné — the residency ID card issued by the National Immigration Service after your visa is approved. A passport alone is not sufficient.

Businesses are legally required to honor these discounts upon presentation of your carné under Law 6 of 1987. If a business refuses, you can file a complaint with ACODECO — Panama's consumer protection agency — who will investigate and enforce compliance.
